Hello from your most lovable mascot, Ollie the Owl! My friends down at the Brandeis Office of Alumni Relations are sharing blog space with me- aren’t they nice? I am super excited about visiting you all around the world!
When you were a student, you were probably walking 2 miles in the snow, barefoot, uphill both ways. Well, students are still walking uphill both ways (funny how Brandeis works) but there still has not been much snow this year! This morning we got a dusting – the first sign of the white stuff since the end of October! Not that I’m complaining.
One of my favorite places on campus is Usen Castle. Did you know that it’s the only original building on campus from the Middlesex College years? While some of the views are pretty spectacular, the courtyard is a great place to do some reading, and Castle Commons is always a bustling spot, the BEST parts of the Castle are the hidden passages. Owls like me know all the hideouts.
The Castle is home to one of my other favorite haunts, Cholmondley’s Coffeehouse, otherwise known as Chum’s. Many of the clubs and organizations on campus hold coffeehouses here to raise money and awareness – night owls can hang around to listen to music, drink coffee, eat Lizzy’s ice cream and play board games until 1 or 2 a.m.!
Chum’s is the only student-run establishment on campus. It’s no surprise that Chum’s served as the model for the famous Central Perk on long-running tv series Friends, created by alumni Marta Kauffman ’78 and David Crane ’79. Chum’s attracts some of the best indie acts in the region and even the nation, including Mountain Goats, Girl Talk, and Freezepop, not to mention hundreds of a cappella performances.
Love and bagels,
